Up-and-coming indie artist, Analise, released her new single “I’ve Never Smoked” on January 23rd. The ethereal vocals and magnetically soft instrumentals make for an addictive song. Analise hails from New Hampshire and has made her sound completely her own. She has been inspired by artists such as Dijon, Adrienne Lenker, and Leith Ross, and the inspiration comes through her sound. This song is a dreamy ode to the way we let people treat us, and realizing that we aren’t crazy.
This is reflected through lyrics like “You act like it’s nothing”, “You love like it’s nothing”, and “You leave like it’s nothing”. These lyrics are like coming to the realization that the person you love doesn’t show up the way you do. She compares the feeling of this relationship to feelings that one may get when they smoke, and it will resonate with anyone who has been in a toxic relationship. Even when we acknowledge a person isn’t good for us, it can be hard to let go. “My hand’s getting tired, holding onto a fire. I’ll let it burn out, leave you on the ground,” Analise sings with a melancholy that you can feel in your chest. The use of metaphors in this song shows off the poetic lyricism of Analise, and matched with the moodiness of the song, has made it an easy new favorite for me.
The music video, released on February 2nd, visually matches the soft despair you hear in the song. The video shows everything from Analise sitting in a car and having a breakdown, to her burning a suitcase full of clothes in the woods, to her running back to a house, and solemnly sliding down a door she just shut. The vibes of the video reminded me of “Ceilings” by Lizzy McAlpine, with the running away and sadness of it all. With the release of the video, Analise announced to stay tuned for more, and I’m excited to see what else she has up her sleeve. Analise is quickly cementing herself as an artist to watch, and I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next.
