Beauty School Dropout is a California based alt-rock band consisting of Lead Singer Colin Hutzler, Bassist Brent (beepus) Burdett, Guitarist & Producer Bardo Novonty, and Drummer Colton Flurry. The band formed in 2020 and are best known for their blend of pop, rock, punk, and hip hop influences.  They have previously played major festivals such as Download Fest, Warped Tour, Louder than Life, Lollapalooza, Sad Summer Fest, and So What? Fest! Over the past 5 years the band has gained popularity on titkok and instagram and have been given the chance to open for some of the artists they grew up admiring.

With the Summer School Tour & Blink-182 tour coming up, do you guys have a song that you can’t wait to perform?

We are looking forward to playing our most recent single, FEVER. As well as any of the new material off our upcoming album that we haven’t played for a proper crowd yet!

What song(s) off of your new album are you excited most for fans to hear and why?

All of them! This album has taken us to so many new heights sonically. If we had to pick just one, I would say Madonna since it is one of the first times we’ve made a track that sounds like this.

Who were your biggest musical influences growing up and how do you think they've influenced your own work?

Our range of influences are so diverse. Each member of the band comes from such different places on the spectrum of “rock” music. I think altogether we have always shared common interests over bands that put on electrifying performances, innovative songwriting/productions  and people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Some examples being My Chem, Deftones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skrillex, Green Day, Blink, Motley Crue, etc.

What do you hope people feel when they listen to your music?

We want our music to make people feel ALIVE. Ultimately we want to make something that makes people feel seen, but we also want people to feel just as ecstatic listening through their car speakers  as they do at our shows.

How has your sound evolved since your first release?

Oh man, we have come a long way. More than anything the quality of the songwriting and production. We have spent so much time refining our skills as musicians and outside of the band, the other half of our career is making records for other artists so that has allowed us to really sharpen the blade. That and I think finding ourselves as people and growing as a unit has created more of an identity within the sound.

What’s a risk you’ve taken creatively that paid off?

We’ve never jumped at a sound just because it’s trending at that moment and that has been a major pay off for us. Even outside the music we always marched to our own drum. For example, the first year that we played shows in LA we refused to play typical venues you’d go to for rock shows. Only thrift stores, night clubs, and odd spaces that made people feel like it was a party more than a show. That was huge for us, because by the time we started ticketing shows at home they would sell out quickly which led to way bigger opportunities shortly after.

Out of all the bands you’ve opened for over the years, who has been your favorite?

Blink 182 and Turnstile was epic.

What can fans expect next from you after this run of shows, any headliners?

More shows, More music, More events and pop ups. Everything. We have spent the last two years making this project so we can spend the next few absolutely turning it up with the dropouts!

What advice would you give to your younger self when you were just starting out?

F***ck what everyone else thinks. If you have a vision, see that vision through. Be Authentic to YOU. That will always make you the happiest.

Can you walk us through your songwriting process?

It is ever changing. Usually someone starts playing a chord progression and it’s a whole lot of saying yes around the room until we have built something strong enough to record. But other times someone has a melody or a beat produced and we go straight to toplining and recording. It all happens so fast really. We usually turn demo bounces around in 4-5 hours.

Is there a lyric or song of yours off of the new album that you’re especially proud of?

Blitzkrieg Top haha genius.

Do you have a favorite or least favorite song to play live?

As of late, our favorite song to play has been FEVER and ON YOUR LIPS. Probably because they’re so new.

Lastly, How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music?

The sound of a generation. Like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.
