Beauty School Dropout’s song of the summer: “FEVER”

Still on the hunt for your song of the summer? Want something you can blast with the car windows down on a back road just to feel like you're in a YA movie living the dream? Want something to send to your lover that’ll get the point across real fast? If you answered yes to any of those questions, let me point you toward “FEVER,” the latest song dropped by California renegade pop-punkers Beauty School Dropout.

To me, the song itself just feels like summertime vibes. It’s got a strong drum beat, funky guitars, and overall a retro-esque vibe that reminds me of driving around with all the windows down at sunset. The vibes are on par with other Beauty School Dropout songs, mixing those 1970s psychedelic vibes straight with bits of the 2000s indie rock vocal styles and the energy of something fresh and new. It’s a song that makes you want to dance, or even better, makes you want to party.

If you look at the song's lyrics, they’re pretty straight to the point of what the song’s about - a lover you can’t stop thinking about. There’s not much doubt that words like “Your clothes look better when they’re on the floor” and “Meet in the bathroom, I don’t want the girls to know” are anything but raunchy. While I’m not sure it’d be a song I’d personally want to send a long-time partner, I think it would be a great soundtrack to some possibly great, possibly poor decisions after a night out or for when you want to feel like a lovestruck teenager again.

The music video is also a great look into what you can expect from seeing Beauty School Dropout live, while also playing with the stereotypes of what everyone thinks being in a band must be like. It’s set ts a house/DIY venue show – something the band is obviously familiar with since that’s how all your favorites start – it’s crowded, there’s flashing lights, alcohol and cigarettes all over the place, crowdsurfing in way too small of spaces, and glammed up girls dancing and getting all up in the bands personal space. The vibes it portrays are hard to recreate from reality into something staged that was pulled off extremely well. The band has no shortage of energy in the video either, and while I haven’t had the chance to see them live yet, it mirrors all the energy I see via video clips tagging them on social media.

Overall, I think the song is a great next step into building up the image of Beauty School Dropout, especially before they head off to Summer School Festival this summer (to which I can only hope they’ll play this song at). We can also hope that more songs off their upcoming album “WHERE DID ALL THE BUTTERFLIES GO?” are filled with just as much frenzy and familiar vibes that the band has curated for themselves. Be sure to add this song to your favorite hyped-up energy playlist, and consider giving the music video a watch:
