Oklou is a French singer-songwriter who specializes in electronic pop. She first got widespread attention with her 2020 mixtape Galore, and last month she played Coachella. She's wrapping up her North America tour this May, and I got to catch her at a sold-out show in Philadelphia. She came here to serve.

To start the night, Vickie Cherie took the stage as the opener. She honestly wasn't on my radar going in, but I came away really impressed. Before she went on stage, I actually saw her getting into character on the side stage, which confused me at first. Once she started, though, it made complete sense. She performed behind a transparent screen used to project visuals and videos, which created this effect where she and the screen looked like they were a part of each other. On top of that, she was dancing and singing the whole time while fully staying in character. It was genuinely one of a kind.

After that, Oklou came on stage around 9:15 and opened with "ict." What surprised me right away was that she only played the intro of the song, and she also played a recorder that lights up. There weren't any other lights in the venue during that moment, and it created this really eerie, dreamy atmosphere. Very Oklou. She then followed up with "thank you for recording" and "obvious." Out of everything she played, "thank you for recording" had my heart for the night. It’s my favorite song off her latest album, and she sounded exactly like the recording live.

Since it was a sold-out show, the venue was packed from the pit all the way up to the balcony. Even though it was a Tuesday night, everyone showed up with full energy. People were dancing, jumping, and fully immersing themselves in the music, which honestly made the whole experience even better.

Overall, it was a really great show. Oklou's stage presence is strong, and her sound translates really well live. If she announces more dates, it's definitely worth going out of your way to catch her.
