Summer Hoop announces debut EP “Self Disrespect” along with release of new single “Tore Up”

Alternative pop artist Summer Hoop released her new single, “Tore Up,” today, along with the announcement of her debut EP.

Her EP, “Self Disrespect,” out November 6th, will feature six tracks, including her previous singles “The Pursuit of Misery” and “Mindlessly”. “Tore Up” features Asha Locke of GILT and encompasses a Euphoria-esque world met with metalcore. Hoop channels the complexities of insecurity and the unknown through self-destructing behaviors.
In a press release from Cupid Theory, Hoop said, "I have an unfortunate list of reckless habits and destructive tendencies that I have tried to suppress in the pursuit of being what somebody else needs in a relationship. “Tore Up” is the inevitable ending every time, blacked out at the function, yelling over loud music, asking somebody to accept me and just let me be myself. It’s a bad cycle. They always leave, but the club lights are pretty, and I’m going to turn up with tears in my eyes."
In the first verse, Hoop sings, “I didn't mean to drag you down here to the bottom with the lights low,” revealing guilt for how her actions affect those around her.
In the pre-chorus, she sings, “Dance with death, I just want to feel alive.” The lyrics highlight dancing the pain away and essentially hiding in plain sight beneath club lights.
The chorus breaks into electric vibrations and reveals her current state: self-sabotaging at the club. She sings, “Can you feel the beat down your spine? You don't want to know where your girl is at tonight cause I'm tore up from the floor up.”
In the second verse, Hoop sings, “Got a pill to swallow if you want to see an angel die / We could reach nirvana, it's a place with you and I.” The line implies dragging another person along for the destructive ride. It can also be seen as a play on the phrase ‘hard pill to swallow’, referring to her emotions and the way she conducts herself; this progresses from the first line of the song, where she feels guilty about the involvement of others.
She continues, “All my lies are in line with the bass tonight / And you can’t feel a thing when you look in my eyes.” Hoop drowns out her insecurities through escapism in the atmosphere.
Hoop hits the road this week supporting Nate Vickers through the end of September. “Self Disrespect” is available to pre-save here.
"I have never felt more confident in myself artistically and this EP is a really transparent form of self reflection that I’ve spent years running from in my personal life. I feel simultaneously so fragile and so incredibly tough most of the time and I feel like this EP really shows both sides of the same coin sonically and lyrically. Time to disrespect yourself (:
