Sun Room is a fresh band out of Southern California, making music that I would describe as Summer Surf Rock. The band formed in 2020 and released their first couple of singles before playing Austin City Limits in 2021, and proceeding to open for Inhaler in 2021/2022 and Louis Tomlinson in 2022, as well as Louis’s Away From Home Festival in Spain that year. It has been steady momentum since then. The band released their latest EP Ritual of Chaos back in July of this year, bringing in more of the edgy rock influences into their discography.
To start the show and get everyone ready for Sun Room, West 22nd opened up the set. West 22nd is an indie rock band from Austin, Texas made up of lead vocals, drums, bass, lead guitar and rhythm guitar. They definitely have a similar vibe to Sun Room, with melodies that remind you of the beach, while also diving into some more indie-rock inspired sounds. Their entire set was super high energy, even when they played their more mellow songs. You could tell all of them really enjoyed playing together. They were jumping around and dancing together for 30 minutes straight. The stage presence was great, and they kept the audience engaged really well. The vocals were dynamic and there was a great balance of mellow moments and high energy rock make-you-wanna-jump-around songs. I definitely recommend giving them a listen!
Then came time for Sun Room! I first saw Sun Room back when they opened for Louis Tomlinson, and I have kept my eye on them since, but this was the first time that I’ve been able to catch them on a headline show, and it was such a good show! This latest album they have leaned more into that indie rock sound, while still managing to keep subtle beats of that beach rock sound, making for a fun, unique sound that is infectious. From the beginning of the set to the end of the set, the four piece band was locked in. The energy was buzzing and not one of them wavered the whole time. From vocals to musicianship, I couldn’t pick out anything going astray. Their music, especially live, just makes you wanna dance around. Plus, the lights put the finishing touches on the aesthetic, keeping the stage moving and dynamic behind the boys. I admit I am a bit biased with them, I do think they are one of my favorite smaller bands, but I would 100% tell anyone I met that had any taste for indie-rock music that they are one to put into your rotation. I will definitely be going to see them again next tour!
