Baylee Littrell Has Had Enough, And He’s Not Afraid to Say It
Everyone has a breaking point.
For Baylee Littrell, that breaking point became “I’ve Had Enough.”
Released October 2, this new single finds Littrell in one of his most vulnerable chapters yet. Written earlier this year during a difficult time in his life, “I’ve Had Enough” explores the uncertainty of what might come next.
“I wrote this song earlier this year while feeling mentally broken,” Littrell stated when asked about the single. “‘I’ve Had Enough’ is about me wrestling with my life decisions and priorities. It comes from a place deep within my heart, with hopes that it relates to others who have felt the same.”
That kind of honesty is what makes this song feel like more than just another simple single release. It’s a snapshot of an artist trying to figure out life in real time.
It starts as a slow beat, but towards the end the electric guitar comes in hot for a solo. As if, without words, trying to show the change Littrell has had when writing this song, from unsure about what to do to now knowing he needs to move forward towards freedom. Whether that freedom be from a relationship or career-wise, Littrell knows his future is bright. He just needs to act on it.
Littrell's vocals change from the beginning to the end. At first, quieter, representing the uncertainty he talked about, but he moves into a stronger, louder voice, like he’s having this active conversation with himself and finally realizes what he needs to do: set his priorities straight.
It was the last lyric that caught my attention and had me questioning everything I knew about this song: “In a world full of black and blue, will we ever let the color peek through?”
I saw the natural progression from uncertainty to finality, just like most vulnerable songs, but these lyrics had me do a double-take. This caught my attention because it’s natural, and it lets the audience know it’s a human writing this song. I say this because I’ve done that before, gone from being uncertain about what to do next to immediately making up my mind, but there’s still that “what if” peeking through the certainty.
As humans, we don’t always know what is going to happen or whether what we decide to do is right or wrong. But I think Baylee Littrell did an amazing job capturing those emotions and being vulnerable to his audience.
But this personal side of Littrell’s songwriting isn’t something new to his audience because during his run on American Idol Season 23, he performed his original song “Hey Jesus.” This gave viewers their first glimpse into this stripped-back vulnerability behind the artist, while his recent works have allowed him to explore a more polished pop and R&B sound.
Littrell’s previous single, “So Be It,” has spent four consecutive weeks in the Top 40 at pop radio, marking another step forward in Littrell’s evolving sound. Now, “I’ve Had Enough” feels like a different progression, showing listeners where he is emotionally.
As if to show Littrell isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Just a couple of days after the release, he will be hitting the road with the Jonas Brothers for 13 arena dates across the U.S. and Canada. Beginning on October 8, in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, the tour includes a Detroit stop at Little Caesars Arena on October 25, which is near me!
For an artist entering a new chapter, the timing of the release and upcoming tour feels fitting.
Which goes to say that maybe “having enough” isn’t always about giving up.
Sometimes, it’s about being honest enough with yourself about what needs to change.
And with “I’ve Had Enough,” Baylee Littrell is letting listeners hear that honesty for themselves.
