Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Spencer Smith has finally brought her long awaited THE ART OF BEING A MESS! Tour to Australian shores for the first time. The singer became internationally known after her self-released single, ‘Fingers Crossed’, hit the top 10 charts in multiple countries, including Australia and the UK whilst on the back of a viral demo released on TikTok in that same year. Joining Lauren on the Australian leg of her tour are New Zealand performer, Cassie Henderson, and English singer-songwriter, Maisy Kay. I would also like to express a big thank you to Live Nation and Lauren’s team for having me to cover the show!

Halloween night in the heart of Brisbane only added to the already electrifying energy that hung in the air in anticipation for Lauren Spencer Smith’s debut show in Brisbane. The Fortitude Music Hall was packed, with fans lining up outside the venue hours in advance to doors opening in hopes of securing the best spot for viewing. Attendees a mixture of donned bright, striking outfits and Halloween costumes seemingly planned weeks in advance specifically for the show. When the clock ticked over to 7pm, the venue doors swung open and excited concert goers flooded inside, with some choosing to browse the merch stall to cop one of the limited edition tour tees and others preferring to secure their spot at the barricade to be as up close to the magic as possible.

Excited fans luckily wouldn’t have to wait very long as the first opening artist of the night, Maisy Kay, took to the stage at 7:30pm. The audience cheered as Maisy entered from the sidestage dressed like an ethereal garden fairy. Donning a gorgeous purple dress with purple platforms and white fishnets, Maisy glided around the stage while seamlessly hitting all of the high notes in her songs. Over the course of her half an hour set, the UK singer performed multiple original tracks from ‘KARMA’ to ‘Death Of The Party, but the one song she did that showcased her vocal ability was her cover of ‘Running Up That Hillby Kate Bush, which she performed in celebration of the newest trailer for Stranger Things season five. Maisy received a huge round of applause as her set concluded, successfully warming up the audience for the next opener, Cassie Henderson.

The Voice AU finalist, Cassie Henderson, rocked up to the stage at 8:15pm, dressed up as Viola from the cult classic movie She’s The Man while she performed a thirty minute set, playing a multitude of original tracks from ‘Whatever’ to ‘Seconds to Midnight, as well as performing an extremely well received cover of the popular song Good Luck, Babeby Chappell Roan. Cassie’s performance utilised a mixture of acoustic and electric guitar, as well as just her, her microphone, and the backing track allowing her to run freely around the stage and interact with the audience. Cassie is currently a finalist on The Voice Australia, Australians can choose to vote for her through The Voice’s website or texting CASSIE to 0417 779 677.

After much anticipation, at 9:15pm the lights dimmed to near darkness with the only amount of illumination coming from a prop phonebooth to the left of the stage. Every few seconds, the phone rang through the speakers while animal noises played simultaneously. Before long, a familiar voice came over the microphone, but it wasn’t Lauren. It was Steve Irwin, which caused an eruption of cheers from the Australian audience. Then, out of nowhere, Lauren Spencer Smith appeared centre stage dressed as none other than Steve Irwin himself, she even performed her opening track ‘IF KARMA DOESN'T GET YOU (I WILL)’ with a toy crocodile in tow. Even while dressed up as the Australian icon, Lauren’s vocals and energetic stage presence rang true stronger than ever.

During the following track, Lauren utilised the makeshift bus stop that sat to the right of the phonebooth, both of which were adorned with hanging spiders and pumpkins. As she sat down on the bus stop bench, she launched head first into ‘28’, a heart-wrenching ballad written about her ill feelings towardscher father for dating a 28 year old and initially lying to Lauren and saying she was 30. The audience sung this song extra loud due to the song’s significant meaning to the singer. Later on in the set while she performed her song ‘lighting the flame’, Lauren introduced her photographer, stating that he was also a breakdancer and asking the crowd if they wanted him to dance, which resulted in a massive round of applause and cheers that bounced off of the venue walls. At the audience’s request, he performed an electrifying breakdance routine while wearing a wig that looked to have come straight from an 80’s themed Halloween outfit. As the audience cheered him on, the faster he went before coming to a halt and giving a bow, receiving an overwhelming applause from the crowd.

Lauren Spencer Smith’s concert at the Fortitude Music Hall has to be one of the most exciting shows I’ve attended to date. With the addition of it being Halloween and having the entirety of Fortitude Valley as well as the concert attendees and opening artists in the spooky spirit just made the show that much more fun and enjoyable. The costumes were incredible and the energy was high the whole way through, which has only added further anticipation for Lauren’s second show at the Fortitude Music Hall on November 6th. All in all, the show was fantastic, and given the chance I would love to attend another show in the future, and based on the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the tour, we can only hope that she’ll be back in the not too distant future.
