Purity Ring Turns Union Transfer into a Dreamscape

Last Friday, I went to Purity Ring’s concert in Philadelphia, and I honestly think everyone should experience their show at least once.

Purity Ring, a Canadian electronic pop duo formed in 2010, has always embraced a surreal image. Their sound sits somewhere between haunting and ethereal in a way that doesn’t make complete sense until you see them live. Only then do you understand how their music transforms into a full sensory experience.

The show was at Union Transfer, one of my favorite venues in the city. It isn’t huge, but it isn’t small either, just the right size to feel personal while still holding a full crowd. Since it was on Halloween, the audience showed up in costumes. I saw Shrek, witches, pirates, pumpkins, and a dozen other creative outfits. The room was packed from front to back. I stood near the back and could see everyone dancing and completely lost in the music.

The opener, yuniVERSE, performed on a smaller setup in the corner because of the stage design for the main act. Her backdrop was covered in flowers, and she sang and danced with so much energy that she easily grabbed everyone’s attention. Her voice sounded amazing throughout the room. I wished she had a bigger stage and maybe a few dancers, because it would have made her performance even stronger. Before leaving, she told us that our jaws would be on the floor once Purity Ring came out, and she wasn’t kidding.

I had seen clips online, but nothing prepared me for what happened next. When I first entered, I noticed eight giant fans sitting at the front of the stage. I thought they were props, but when the lights hit them, they became something else entirely. When they started spinning, the lights reflected off them to create a 3D illusion that looked like magic. It reminded me of the water show Spectra in Singapore, except this time, the light was moving with the music.

The synchronization between the sound and visuals was breathtaking. At one point, the lights looked like fireflies floating through the air. There were some small technical issues at the start, but once everything clicked, it was pure magic.

And if you’re reading this as someone who’s considering going to their show, I’m telling you, GET THAT TICKET!
