On July 11th, Death Cab for Cutie made their second stop on the “I Built You a Tower World Tour” in Milwaukee. The Miller High Life Theater was the perfect setting for fans to settle in and listen to this iconic band and their killer discography. With support from Jay Som, this electric show started off with a bang.
Jay Som took the stage at 8:00 pm and swooned the crowd with their soft alternative indie vibes. They opened with Baybee and played other songs like Superbike. Want It All had darker melodic undertones that replayed for hours in my head after the show. The band expressed that they were elated to be opening for their “favorite band ever” as they continued to warm the crowd up. Ending with The Bus Song from their 2017 album Everybody Works, Jay Som left Milwaukee with a memorable performance and even more excitement for the headlining act.
With fans who’ve waited patiently lining the barricade and filling in the crowd, Death Cab for Cutie took the stage and began this whirlwind night of music with the song Riptides. There was a magnetic energy between the band and the fans that is something I recognize to be what makes live music so special. The visual effects were mesmerizing as the wall of screens behind the band lit up with bright and colorful patterns that complemented the rhythm and vibe of the show. Death Cab for Cutie played iconic songs all night long, including The New Year, I Will Possess Your Heart, Crooked Teeth, and Soul Meets Body. Their encore consisted of 60 & Punk, We Laugh Indoors, No Sunlight, and Bixby Canyon Bridge, which all made their tour debut at this show. As they have for years, Death Cab for Cutie played an iconic show that captivated fans both new and old, and Milwaukee was lucky enough to experience it. The “I built you a tower” world tour has only just begun, so fans still have plenty of chances to catch death cab in a city near them.
