Cade Hoppe made the subtle sweep over to the music scene amid the pandemic and after finding out he was a former NYU basketball player and finance student, I had to find out why. With the start of the lyrics jumping straight into storytelling, I was immediately intrigued. The soft cadence of Cade Hoppe's vocals eases listeners into what feels like a hopeful, almost cinematic moment. There is a warmth to the track that makes it easy to settle into, as if you're being invited along for the ride rather than simply listening from the sidelines.

What surprised me most was how relatable the song felt. I've never been to Lake Michigan, and if I'm being completely honest, it wasn't on my travel bucket list before hearing this song. Yet somehow Hoppe manages to take a very specific destination and turn it into a feeling that feels universal. Anyone who has ever had plans go sideways, or ended up somewhere completely different than expected, will likely find a piece of themselves in this track.

Even better, the music video strengthens that connection. It complements the storytelling without feeling forced, and the subtle humorous moments sprinkled throughout add a layer of charm. Those scenes made me smile more than once and helped make the song feel less like a carefully crafted lesson and more like a genuine memory being shared between friends.

While "Lake Michigan" could easily be interpreted in a variety of ways, my mind immediately wandered to relationships. It captures those butterflies-in-your-stomach moments, spontaneous adventures, and the stories couples end up telling over and over years later. You know the ones; the stories that somehow get funnier, sweeter, and slightly more exaggerated every time they're told. The song taps into that feeling beautifully.

Beyond relationships, though, the song's message stretches much further. At its core, "Lake Michigan" is about learning to appreciate where life takes you, even when it isn't where you intended to go. The metaphor of setting out for the Pacific Ocean and ending up at Lake Michigan is simple, but it's incredibly effective. Most of us have experienced some version of that journey, whether in our careers, relationships, or personal goals.

By the time the final notes fade out, "Lake Michigan" leaves listeners with a gentle reminder that not every detour is a disappointment. Sometimes the places we never planned to end up become the places we remember most. Through thoughtful songwriting, engaging storytelling, and a healthy dose of heart, Cade Hoppe delivers a track that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable, and honestly, it almost makes me want to hop in my car right now, grab some friends, and visit Lake Michigan myself. It is quite obvious when listening to the song that he ended up where he needs to be with that pivot to music in his career.
