After being previously postponed, Ekoh brought The Broken Heart Collector Tour to Hi-Fi in Indianapolis. Our night started with Arankai, who are making their debut live performances on this tour, though for vocalist Oscar, this isn’t his first time performing in front of a live audience, as he’s also the bassist for the band Archers. If you’re a fan of metalcore, booktok, or live performances with a lot of energy, then they’re right up your alley. Oscar spent his time interacting with the crowd: screaming in their faces, stealing people’s phones to record himself onstage, and even coming out into the crowd to hang out for most of one of the songs. It was clear that there were plenty of people there not only to see Ekoh, but to see Arankai as well.
In case you’re unfamiliar with him, Ekoh is an independent hip-hop / alt-rock fusion artist tearing his way through the music scene. He’s got collabs with bands such as Catch Your Breath, Melrose Avenue, Colorblind, and many other bands in the alternative music scene. At the show, he also let us know that he’s got a song with Dayseeker coming out relatively soon, and a new album on its way (though he was told he wasn’t supposed to tell us about it).
Between sets, we had a brief intermission with DJ Kode Break, who did a great job at hyping up the crowd. The energy was already high in the room, but shot up even further as Ekoh made his way onstage. He made his love for performing clear to us, and let us know that going to venues like these and experiencing live music was what made him find connections with other people in the world and why he wanted to keep doing that through his music.
It took no time at all to get the crowds’ hands in the air, and everyone was moving. It didn’t take long for Ekoh to come out into the crowd, then climb up onto the bar in the room and crowdsurf his way back to the stage. Antics from the crowd helped rile things up more, with a mascot head being tossed onto the stage and Kode Break taking that as his cue to wear it during a few of the songs.
Perhaps the most energetic part of the night was when it came time for the namesake of the tour to be performed. Since the song is a collab with Arankai, Oscar came back out onto the stage to help with the performance of the song. The crowd absolutely loved it, and if you asked me, I’d say it was the loudest song of the night. Though I will reserve the rowdiest part of the night for when Ekoh closed out on “Freeverse 3,” when he asked people to toss their shoes up to the stage to be signed during the song.
The Broken Heart Collector tour still has a few more weeks to go, so be sure to check out the rest of the remaining tour dates and catch the show if it’s stopping near you.
