The Wrecks have officially gone on the road for the second part of their ‘Inside:Outside Tour continued’ with a stop in Urbana, Illinois at the Canopy Club. The Wrecks released the first part of their two part EP project Inside: in April this year. The release of Outside has yet to be announced as far as I know. That didn't stop the band from heading back out on the road to do another leg of tour in the US and play more shows this fall!
This tour brought us two openers, Wall Carpets and Phoneboy. Wall Carpets is an alternative rock band from New Jersey who just put out their latest ep ‘Mirrors” in March of this year. With their first official release in 2022, this independent band has a sound that hooks you with catchy beats, high energy, and a blend of punk and indie rock sounds that make you want to bob your head. A fun little side note about the band, the lead vocalist and drummer Trevor and his brother, who is the bassist, are also doubling as guitar and drum techs for The Wrecks on this tour! They were super high energy from the moment they came on stage, and one of the first things they told the audience was to take three steps forward toward the stage. They were not messing around and wanted people to get up close and personal to dance and mosh while they played. A positive also, its hard to find bands that don't hide their drummers for some reason, and since the drummer is also the lead singer, his kit was placed nice and forward on the stage so you could actually see him! It was a super fun, high energy set, and the audience was eating it up.
Next up came Phoneboy. Phoneboy is also a indie-rock band from New Jersey, small world! Phoneboy also put out music earlier this year, their album ‘Heartbreak Designer’ came out back in April. Phoneboy’s sound is what I would like to describe as music to play with the windows down going 80 down a back road. They have infectious melodies, the music ebs and flows in a way that makes it hard not to dance along. They came onto the stage jumping and didn’t stop till they were done playing. They also encouraged the audience to take a step forward to the stage. No one was messing around that night, this music was for jumping and dancing too. The energy built really well through the set and you could tell everyone was having so much fun up there! That energy radiated into the audience and these two bands were such great choices for this tour. It was such a solid line up and made for a super fun show.
Before long it was time for the main event, The Wrecks! I will admit, The Wrecks are one of my favorite bands, so I really have nothing but rave reviews for them. I have seen them live three times now, and they never disappoint. The energy is always at 101%, and Nick, the lead vocalist, has a set of pipes and a wicked falsetto. They have that classic indie rock sound, but find a way to make it fun and exciting and so many of their songs are ear worms in the best way. I can't seem to get them out of my head (though that may have been my own doing as I have been listening to the tour setlist exclusively for the past two weeks). The banter and connection they have with the audience as well is so entertaining. It really does feel like a bunch of friends getting together. Nick did mention that this was his favorite show of tour as well, and I think he was telling the truth. The energy in the room was so high and everyone could feel it. The floor was shaking most of the night because people never stopped dancing and moshing. Of course, during the last song, Nick came out into the audience to have one last mosh pit before the show ended. I applaud this fan base for the mutual respect they provide. I have been to shows where the artist going out into the audience goes horribly wrong and they have trouble getting back to the stage because they are hounded by fans, but I have never seen a Wrecks show, online or of the ones I have been to personally, where the audience failed to open a walkway for him and make sure that everyone stays safe in those mosh pits! I cant wait for the next ep and tour. I highly recommend these guys to anyone with an indie/alternative rock ear.
