Milwaukee was the third stop on Silverstein’s 25 Years of Noise tour, and it was definitely a night to remember. This show not only featured some of Silverstein's most iconic songs, but it also showcased three other amazing bands, which made for an unforgettable night of music.
Bloom, a band from Sydney, Australia, kicked off the night with their fresh Metalcore sound and exhilarating stage presence. This was Bloom’s first time in Milwaukee, and they were excited to be playing The Rave, which is an iconic venue with lots of history. The band played Keep You off their new album, The Light We Chase, and You and I, which is a love song. Bloom’s sound gave me a huge wave of nostalgia and reminded me of bands I grew up on, like Beartooth. Bloom opened for Silverstein in Europe and the UK for the first time, and immediately said yes when they asked them back on their North American tour. They were thankful to all of the fans who showed up early to hear them, and kept high energy through their whole set, even opening up a circle pit during their last two songs.
Free Throw took the stage next, and many fans were pumped and already fans of this band. I’ve been a long-time fan of Free Throw and think that they’ve had a huge impact on the emo music scene. They commanded the room with the amped up emotions in their music, and cultivated a community out of the crowd. They played their iconic song Tongue Tied, and crowd surfing ensued. During their set, they gave a shoutout to Bloom and Silverstein for having them on this tour. To close out their set, they played my favorite song by them, and a Midwest emo classic, Two Beers In.
The final opening band to take the stage before Silverstein was Thursday from New Jersey. Their first time playing The Rave was back in 2001, so they are no strangers to the venue and the city of Milwaukee. The crowd loved Thursday’s classic 2000s emo sound and had a very active stage presence. I found myself bobbing my head along in the photo pit, and found the groove of their music to be contagious. Thursday thanked Silverstein for putting on this tour and said they were nervous to perform alongside them because they don’t have the same Canadian power. This was a funny moment, and the band kept up this energy through the duration of their set.
It was finally time for Silverstein’s set, and the beginning was emotional. The show started with a video detailing how they started as a band, playing for crowds so small you could count the number of audience members on one hand. They said they wanted to make the kind of music they didn’t hear on the radio, and one day, something amazing happened. More and more people started listening, and soon they were able to perform and make music full-time. As the video ended and the band members entered the stage, the energy charged and became electric when they began the set with Negative Space. They also played Stress, which is a fan favorite, and welcomed the beginning of the slew of crowd surfers that were about to start. This was Silverstein's 12th time at The Rave, and they made a point to say how much they love Milwaukee and how they would never skip us on this tour.
When Silverstein played Afterglow, they asked the audience to sing along, which brought about an overwhelming feeling of togetherness for the show. The room was so packed that I had to watch the show from a side room, and I was in awe seeing how many happy crowd surfers ran past me from the barricade. Silverstein creates a freeing environment during their concerts, allowing fans to let loose and enjoy the music to the fullest extent. The band said that it felt amazing to be back in Wisconsin, and told the crowd the cool way they are working this show. Some fans may have noticed, but they began the show by playing newer music and are slowly working their way back into their discography. They also promised that, since this is their 25th anniversary tour, they would be playing at least one song from every album. Fans erupted with this announcement, and the excitement in the room was palpable. The band continued to play songs like You Gotta Stay Positive, The Artist, Your Sword Versus My Dagger, and Worlds Apart, even throwing in a short cover of Helena by My Chemical Romance. They came back on for an encore, playing My Heroine, Smashed Into Pieces, and Bleeds No More.
It was so cool to see the growth of Silverstein as a band during this show, and seeing how long their music has transformed the lives of so many fans. It was especially cool for me because Silverstein is one of the first bands I photographed when I was trying to start my career in 2019. Revisiting their concert and getting the chance to photograph them again all these years later was such a cool experience. Congratulations to Silverstein on 25 years, and be sure to catch them on a later date of the tour.
