After mesmerizing audiences with his cherished debut album When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, released in August 2021, Luke Hemmings maintains his spellbinding hold on fans and critics with his newest EP, boy. On March 6th, the lead singer of the beloved 5 Seconds of Summer took to Instagram to unveil his latest EP, following the release of its first single, "Shakes". Fans eagerly marked their calendars, anticipating the arrival of new music from their favorite artist.

The EP starts off withI’m Still Your Boy” which delves into the nostalgia of childhood, yearning for simpler times amidst the complexities of adulthood. Luke Hemmings, having experienced fame with 5 Seconds of Summer during his teenage years, reflects on the innocence of youth and grapples with the challenges of growing up. The song begins with a gentle acoustic guitar melody, gradually building anticipation before soaring into the chorus.

The lead single “Shakes” sets the tone for the EP, with ethereal vocals guiding listeners through a love-infused narrative. Hemmings' mesmerizing vocal delivery captivates the audience effortlessly.

In “Benny”, which is named after his brother, Hemmings explores the difficulties of being far from home. Having moved from Australia to California at a young age, he candidly expresses his fears of being separated from loved ones and the uncertainty of distant living.

“Close My Eyes”, the EP's second single, introduces a lively blend of synths and drums, echoing themes of introspection and the fleeting nature of life. Throughout the EP, there's a recurring motif of grappling with time slipping away and the importance of living in the present moment. “Garden Life” draws inspiration from a moment of simplicity on a park bench, where Hemmings contemplates life's beauty in its purest form. He poetically compares himself to a comforting presence in his lover's life, offering solace and tranquility. “Close Enough To Feel Youdelves into the complexities of grief, portraying the profound longing for a lost connection. Hemmings explores the idea of embracing pain as a means of staying connected to cherished memories.

I wasn’t always a cynic
It’s just I’ve been bought and sold
But you saw the beauty inside it
At twenty-seven years old”
— Luke Hemmings, Promises

Love emerges as a transformative force in “Promises”, the EP's final track featuring Hemmings' wife, Sierra Deaton. Their harmonious collaboration speaks to the power of love in shaping one's perspective and enriching life's experiences.

Reflecting on the EP, Hemmings shares a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the journey of creating the music. He describes the songs as intimate reflections of his innermost thoughts and experiences, inviting listeners to connect with his personal narrative.
