Matilda Mann, the 20-year-old UK folk singer best known for her song “The Day That I Met You”, has just released her latest track, “Everything I’m Not”. The song delves into themes of love and emotional honesty, showcasing Matilda’s signature soft vocals and folk-inspired sound. Earlier this year, she also dropped “Say It Back”, “Meet Cute”, and “Tell Me That I’m Wrong”, all part of her upcoming album ROXWELL, which is set to release on February 28th, 2025. Everything I’m Not will also be featured in the game Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, set for release on October 29, 2024.
The track sets a dreamy, reflective mood, mixing feelings of uncertainty and the longing for meaningful connection. Matilda touches on her emotional hesitations, calling herself “crazy,” while acknowledging that’s not really who she is. The line, “Call me crazy / But I know that’s everything I’m not,” captures the tension between vulnerability and self-awareness. Her recurring phrase, “Or if I’m dreaming / Then please don’t wake me up,” reflects the fear that this delicate happiness might fade if confronted with reality. The way she plays between dreams and reality throughout the song expresses that fragile balance between hope and doubt.
The melody of “Everything I’m Not” brings to mind “The Day That I Met You,” with both songs sharing an underlying vulnerability. However, they tell different emotional stories. “The Day That I Met You” feels warmer and more grounded, focusing on the comfort that comes after meeting someone special, with a sense of peace and gratitude. In contrast, “Everything I’m Not” leans into uncertainty, reflecting those moments when you’re unsure if what you’re feeling is real or just temporary.
As a long-time fan of Matilda Mann, “Everything I’m Not” didn’t disappoint. Her ability to craft intimate yet relatable songs stands out in this track. The mix of folk-inspired instrumentation with personal, heartfelt lyrics creates a captivating experience, pulling you into her world and leaving you reflecting on your own relationships and inner struggles.
