Gateway Drug - Daniel Seavey

by Nyah Lin | October 22nd, 2024

Gateway Drug is a catchy pop song that has been stuck in fans' heads since before its release. Daniel’s lyrics capture the idea of addiction to relationships and love, comparing previous relationships to a gateway drug. Despite the catchy lyrics, my favorite part is in the production. The unique guitar riffs, rhythmic bass lines, dynamic drums, and Daniel’s harmonies through the chorus are just some of the elements that make the song lively and memorable.

'Cause your ex was just a gateway drug

Your ex was just a gateway drug

I'll be your everything, your nicotine

Don't call the plug, baby, I got what you need

I'll be your Adderall, your morphine

Just face it, baby, I'll get you addicted to me

Although just released, fans of his have been expecting this drop for some time now. Currently touring with Benson Boone on his Fireworks and Rollerblades World Tour, Daniel first debuted the song at a show in Denver, Colorado at the Red Rocks Amphitheater. Since then, popular clips of Daniel going into the crowd and singing to the fans at the barricade have gone viral with viewers comparing it to the movies.

Daniel has numerous posts on TikTok and Instagram promoting the song. With the memorable melody and lyrics, fans can’t help but obsess over it with comments like “I’m already addicted to this song” and “I need to hear it live asap” on Daniel’s post. Since the debut, many TikTok dances and trends have come up inspired by the song.

Daniel has been in the music industry for some time now, starting out in the band Why Don't We, and quickly moving into a solo career following the band's split. Now signed to Atlantic Records, Daniel is known for his perfect pitch and multi-instrumental talents. He has toured once before through the end of 2022 into 2023 where fans were amazed at seeing his one-man band act live. With multiple instruments and a loop pedal, Daniel only needed one other person behind the drum set.

As a fan of his music myself, I can’t help but recommend his music to anyone who enjoys pop music or is interested in music and its production. It is truly inspiring to see him grow as an individual artist and make music personal to him. The song has been on repeat in my head since the night at Red Rocks, and I am looking forward to seeing him live and hearing what he can create on stage.
