The four former members of One Direction expressed their profound sorrow on Thursday, saying they were "completely devastated" by the heartbreaking news that Liam Payne had passed away after a tragic fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
“In time, and when everyone is able, we’ll have more to say,” wrote Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles in a shared statement. “But for now, we need time to grieve, to process the loss of our brother, who we loved with all our hearts. The memories we shared with him will be cherished for the rest of our lives.”
The grief felt by the former members echoed across social media as they each posted their personal tributes a day after Payne's untimely death. Horan added his later, on Friday.
“I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing,” Styles penned alongside a photo of Payne, taken from behind, staring out at a sea of fans. “His greatest joy was spreading happiness to others, and it was an honor to be by his side while he did so.”
Styles continued, “The years we spent together are the most precious memories I will ever hold.”
Tomlinson shared a heartfelt message accompanied by a photo of the two of them smiling on stage. “Liam was someone I admired every single day, with his vibrant spirit, infectious humor, and boundless kindness,” Tomlinson wrote. “To me, Liam was the very heart of One Direction. His musical talent, his presence, his dedication—it made him irreplaceable.”
Turning his message to Payne himself, Tomlinson wrote, “If you can hear me, I feel so lucky to have known you. I’m finding it so hard to say goodbye.”
Zayn Malik shared a bittersweet photo of the two of them, much younger, asleep in a car, his head resting on Payne’s lap. “Liam, I’ve caught myself talking to you, hoping you can hear me from wherever you are. There were still so many things I wanted to say to you,” Malik wrote. “There are no words that can capture this emptiness in me right now. I am beyond devastated.”
Horan posted his own tribute on Friday, sharing a photo of Payne, writing simply, “It just doesn’t feel real.”
“All the laughter we shared over the years—sometimes over the smallest, silliest things—keeps flashing before my eyes through all this sadness,” Horan wrote. He mentioned seeing Payne recently. “I had no idea that the hug we shared that night would be our last.”
Payne’s family, stricken by grief, also released a statement on Thursday, asking for privacy during this unimaginable loss. “Our hearts are broken,” they wrote. “Liam will forever live in our hearts. We will remember him for his kindness, his humor, and his courage.”
Payne first rose to prominence after auditioning for “The X Factor” in 2008. He found success when he returned in 2010, when Simon Cowell brought him together with Styles, Horan, Malik, and Tomlinson, forming what became One Direction—a group that defined a generation of pop music.
The band released five albums and saw 29 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. But in 2015, they announced a hiatus that became permanent in 2016. The world never quite healed from that fracture, and now, the loss of Payne makes it ache all the more.
On Wednesday evening, outside the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, fans gathered in the streets, singing One Direction’s songs through tears. Among them was Alejandra Hernández, 21, clutching a bouquet of white flowers as she wept.
“I grew up with their music,” she said, her voice trembling. “One Direction shaped my life.”
As Payne’s body was taken away in a fire truck, Mia Elsner, 18, cried uncontrollably. “This is tearing me apart,” she said. “His music was like warmth on a cold day. He was different from everyone else.”
Like many fans, Elsner was trying to avoid social media, where rumors about Payne’s death were spreading. “I don’t think I can listen to his songs for a while,” she admitted.
Camila Martínez, 24, was working in a nearby shop when she heard the devastating news. She immediately called two friends to join her in mourning. “Liam was my favorite,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “When the band broke up, it felt like my whole world was falling apart. Their music was what I turned to whenever I felt lost.”
“I’m still holding out hope that this is all just a terrible dream,” she added.
Across the music industry, tributes poured in. Rita Ora and Charlie Puth shared their memories of Payne, both expressing their disbelief and grief.
“I’m devastated,” Ora wrote, alongside a black-and-white photo of her and Payne, his head resting on her shoulder. “He had such a gentle soul. I’ll never forget how much joy he brought to every moment we spent together, whether it was on stage or behind the scenes.”
She added, “Our song, ‘For You,’ has taken on an entirely new meaning for me now. Rest in peace, Liam.”
As a lifelong One Direction fan, this loss cuts deeper than I could have ever imagined. One Direction was more than a band to me—it shaped who I am. I know Liam faced struggles later in life and made mistakes, but that doesn't erase the impact he had on me. I’m not mourning the person who lost his way; I’m mourning the boy I fell in love with—the one who lit up the stage with his smile, who held us together during the hardest times, who gave so much of himself to us fans, especially during the pandemic.
To the members of One Direction, his family, his son Bear, and his girlfriend, my heart is with you. To those who feel like a part of their childhood has died with him—you are not alone. I’m not mourning the man he became, but the boy who stepped onto that X Factor stage at 16, full of dreams, and the man who kept giving us everything we could have ever asked for.
For that, I will always be grateful.
