You may recognize Finn’s name from the incredibly popular show ‘Stranger Things’, or the 2017 film adaptation of Steven King’s ‘It’, but he has branched out from acting to bring fans his nine song debut album ‘Happy Birthday’, and the subsequent “The Objection! Tour”. The US leg of the tour opened in Thalia Hall in Chicago, IL, kicking off their travels across the US this September.

Thalia Hall is one of my favorite venues in Chicago. The fans are always buzzing with energy in the gorgeous music hall, and that was no different tonight. Sometimes it can be hit or miss with how packed a venue will get for the opener on a debut tour like Finn’s. But Thalia hall’s floor was packed almost as soon as those doors opened. Fans packed the floor right away, wasting no time to get their sights on a good spot for the show. And they were all buzzing! You could feel the excitement in the air as it inched closer to show time.

The show started off with the Chicago born trio ‘The Slaps’. Their first official release having been back in 2017, the band has built themselves quite a solid cult following preceding this tour with Finn. This solidified the second the lights went out and those fans could be heard screaming in excitement as they began to take the stage. The three of them met back in college at DePaul, and you can feel the history between them. While each song they performed felt like it had the potential to fit into several genres at once, the band’s sound was solid through each tune. Throughout their set there were blends of sounds reminiscent  of what felt like 60s and 70s folk and rock music, mixed with hints of jazz influences. Think The Beatles meet a blend of modern folk and indie sounds, with a sprinkle of country twang here and there. I had the privilege of sitting behind some of what I presumed to be their friends (if not really big fans) during their set, which brought the energy of my experience of their set up a notch. It always makes the music feel even more real when you can physically see the connection people are having with a band on stage, and boy were they jamming out! If you are a fan of indie-folk music I highly recommend checking them out, as I will be doing myself!

Thalia hall began to fill with even more fans and energy  as it approached Finn’s set time. Usually I never go into a show completely blind to the music or the artist, but I decided to surprise myself tonight and I held back from listening to Finn’s new music before the show. I’m glad I did! The Slaps joined Finn on stage as well to play as his band, along with an additional bassist. The energy instantly picked up once they came out on stage, fans screaming as the music began to play. Finn had the audience entertained the whole night. As he got more comfortable throughout the set, his stage presence got bigger and the audience could feel it. He sang a few old songs, a few new songs, and happy birthday to the drummer who was celebrating his birthday that night! While bantering with the audience Finn revealed that the new album was recorded right here in Chicago, and that he is a big fan of the Chicago music scene. Finn’s sound is very much in the realm of indie-rock/pop with hints of folk sounds as well. With catchy chord progressions and dynamic melodies I am definitely interested to see where he will go next. For his encore after an energetic set, Finn came back on stage solo to sing a soft ballad ‘Happy Birthday’ before ending the show with the energy and rock sounds of ‘Crown’.

Overall good show, great energy, catchy tunes, and alot of momentum for the rest of tour and future projects!
