Heart Attack Man Heats Up Indianapolis

Normally, when people say someone “brought the heat” to a venue, they’re not meaning it literally. But in the case of Heart Attack Man in Indianapolis on June 28th? I mean it both figuratively and literally, because the venue was swelteringly hot—something that all the bands commented on—and despite that, the energy the bands gave us on stage could be felt throughout the whole room.

Dear Seattle kicked off our night, visiting us from Sydney, Australia—their first time in the United States. They were astonished to see the room packed even at the start of the night and very thankful for everyone who had come out at the start to see them play, especially to a few in the crowd who’d heard of them already. Their presence started laid-back and groovy, but as the set went on, they ramped up the energy through the end.

Carpool, a genre-blurring punk rock band from New York, was a complete energy shift, coming out as a ball of energy with screaming vocals. Vocalist Stoph Colasanto spent a significant amount of time in the crowd, jumping in at the beginning to start a mosh pit and doing it again at the end. The energy wasn’t only shown off in the crowd, though, as he and the rest of the band were bouncing all over the stage. Stoph also took some time to proclaim his love for Indianapolis, one of the top three cities that the band enjoys, and described the city and its people as “loyal, tough, gritty, and true.”

The Dirty Nil came onto the stage, thanking everyone for showing up to the rock and roll show, and a rock and roll show is certainly what they gave us. The three-piece band from Ontario, Canada, knew how to work the stage and make the most of the space they were given. The crowd was full of fans who’d heard of them already, and songs like “Blowing Up Things In The Woods” were met with many cheers. Stoph from Carpool also made a surprise reappearance, running out briefly to sing along before disappearing offstage again. The band made it clear that their statement that they loved Indianapolis was true, and they wanted everyone to know to be on the lookout for their new album coming out on July 25th.

Every band comes with an origin story of how you found them, and Cleveland-originated punk rock band Heart Attack Man is probably the most unique of the bunch. I discovered them about two years ago, thanks to being pretty active on social media and seeing a tweet from them about how they would be selling deodorant on their upcoming tour. Now, I didn’t get a chance to check out the merch table at this show and see if they still sell deodorant, but it was iconic enough of a move for it to stick with me the past couple of years and make me want to check them out the next time I could.

And I’ve got to say, the show was worth the wait. The band burst onto the stage with instantaneous energy that traveled throughout the room and got everyone off their feet. To add to the energy, Stoph from Carpool came out onto the stage again, screamed some vocals, and crowdsurfed off stage and into the crowd. After that, there wasn’t anyone left in the room who wasn’t dancing along. The song “Like A Kennedy” had its own special stage theatrics planned, with Tades from Hot Mulligan showing up onstage to sing some lyrics before dropping dead.

Dancing along was also heavily encouraged by the band, especially for the title track of their latest album, “Joyride The Pale Horse,” which was released in April of this year. Their setlist featured several songs off the album, including “End of the Gun” and “Spit.” One part of the show I haven’t stopped thinking about is the very beginning, where they start with “One More Song (Imposter Syndrome),” as I think you would expect it to be at the end of the setlist due to the theme, but instead the show’s just begun and the band is proving that there’s still plenty left in them.

Heart Attack Man still has plenty of dates left on their summer U.S. tour, as well as shows in Canada, the U.K., and a bit of mainland Europe later in the year. If you’re interested in catching them live, head over to their website and see if they’ll be stopping anywhere near you.
