A young girl born and raised in London, with dreams of pursuing a career in music. Dreams of attending NYU in New York City. Today, that young woman has turned those dreams into a reality. I had the opportunity to sit down in person with emerging artist Imogen Valentine to discuss her journey, her music, and most importantly her latest single “Same Font Different Man”.
Imogen was born and raised in London but is now a New York-based artist. Growing up in a Hispanic household played an important role in shaping her path into the music world, inspiring her while allowing her to carry family traditions into her songwriting. One tradition that stands out to her is celebrating Three Kings Day, a holiday celebrated in Puerto Rico as part of the Christmas season. She describes the “warmth” of Latin culture and her own household as something that has helped shape her music, her style, and the artist she is today.
While her upbringing in London and her Hispanic roots helped shape the artist she would become, Imogen always knew that New York was where she wanted to take the next step in her journey. In fact, she knew she wanted to attend NYU from a very young age. At just thirteen years old, Imogen had already set her sights on the university, thanks in part to one of her favorite shows, Gossip Girl. Being a fan of the show, Imogen first discovered NYU through its characters and quickly became fascinated with the idea of attending the university herself. She went on to discover NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, which ultimately became her dream school. Years later, that childhood dream would become a reality when she made the move from London to New York to pursue her education and her passion for music.
This transition was just the beginning of something bigger. It marked the start of Imogen’s journey into the world of music, finding her sound and using her experiences and influences to create the music she shares with her listeners today. Her first EP, Ouch!, was released in 2024, followed by her latest EP, Little Miss Optimist, which has already surpassed 200,000 streams. Imogen loves making music for the girls, but she also finds it endearing when male listeners reach out to tell her how much they appreciate and connect with her music. Her latest single, “Same Font Different Man,” continues that connection through a story that many listeners may find familiar. The inspiration for the song came after a girls’ night with friends, when the conversation turned to bad exes. What started as a conversation between friends eventually became the inspiration for one of Imogen’s latest songs. The concept of the song explores how different relationships can sometimes have surprisingly similar patterns, even when the people involved are completely different. Imogen takes those familiar experiences and turns them into something playful and relatable, capturing the conversations that happen between friends after dealing with the wrong guys.
While music is such a big part of Imogen’s life, there is much more to her than being an artist. Outside of making music, she describes herself as someone who enjoys the simple things and making time to explore the city around her. She loves reading and discovering new bookstores, cafe hopping, and having a wine night with friends. Her down-to-earth personality makes it easy to see that, even with her growing career, Imogen still finds joy in the little moments outside of music.
After spending time with Imogen and getting to know more about her journey, one thing that stood out to me was how genuine and grounded she is. From dreaming about attending NYU at just 13 years old to now building a life and career in New York, her story is a reminder of what can happen when you continue to pursue something you believe in. Her passion for music, her connection with her audience, and the way she draws from her own experiences all make her an artist worth keeping an eye on. There is a sense that this is only the beginning for Imogen Valentine, and I’m excited to see where her music takes her next.
And what’s next for Imogen? What can her fans and listeners expect to see?
As she prepares to close the chapter on Little Miss Optimist, Imogen has plenty to keep fans excited, including plans for a deluxe release and a remix. She’s looking forward to introducing a new era of her music and giving listeners a glimpse into what’s next.
For now, fans can follow Imogen Valentine on Instagram and TikTok and stream her latest single, “Same Font Different Man,” as they wait to see what she has in store next.
