February 4th was a cold day outside, but fans didn’t seem to mind as they lined up outside the Hi-Fi in Indianapolis to catch Meet Me @ The Altar and Pollyanna’s show on the Worried Sick tour that night. Of course, once we were all inside, things began to heat up quickly, especially as we danced along to the pre-show playlist full of emo bangers that everyone knew. As more people piled in, the temperature in the room rose, and so did the crowd’s anticipation for a night of fun and good music.

Kicking off the night was Pollyanna, a DIY-scene raised punk rock band from New Jersey. The band captures a wide range of topics in their music, from queer love and trans pride to self-loathing to burning down oppressive establishments. Their focus is to turn hatred into something joyful, and the powerful messages in their music definitely resonated with the crowd.

Frontperson Jill Beckett was an absolute powerhouse on stage, riling up the crowd within minutes, jumping into the crowd to lead a wall of death, and getting the dancing started in no time. The band also had a few antics up their sleeves - call-backs, calling out the government, and some crowd involvement with their set. My personal favorite moment was when they asked the crowd to share their pettiest moments in life, as a way to start off their rightfully named song “Petty.”

Meet Me @ The Altar is a band with a pretty unique start to their career. Formed in 2015, the band originally was made up of members who’d never met in person before - in fact, they all lived in different states and made music solely via collaborating over the Internet! MM@TA went on their first tour in 2018 and quickly gained popularity when they were backed by several notable figures in the pop-punk scene.

It was clear from the start that MM@TA brought all their energy onto the stage that night, with vocalist Edith Johnson never stopping for a moment from her dancing. It didn’t take long for the crowd to follow suit, and shortly thereafter, we got our first mosh pit of the night going. It was dedicated to the ladies and theydies, though dudes were allowed to join in if they wanted.

The band also shared a few anecdotes with us throughout the night, with one in particular sticking out to me as the funniest. Edith stated that she wasn’t sure that she remembered actually playing in this venue before (though they were here only a couple of years ago), but she did remember the green room. While I’ve never seen it personally, it apparently comes equipped with both a pool table and ping pong, something that Edith really enjoyed.

Though the Worried Sick tour has already drawn to a close, be sure to keep up with Pollyanna and Meet Me @ The Altar. Things are only just beginning for these bands, and you’ll want to say you knew them before they made it big time.
