As winter settled into Dallas, people traded the cold air outside for the buzzing atmosphere inside the American Airlines Center. Thousands of ONCEs filled the arena early, lightsticks glowing in every direction as fans hurried to their seats, eager for the start of TWICE’s THIS IS FOR World Tour stop on January 31.
The moment the lights dropped, the screams were immediate. TWICE opened the night with a presence that made the massive arena feel surprisingly intimate, thanks in large part to the 360-degree stage set in the center of the floor. No matter where you were seated, the group made sure every side of the crowd felt included, constantly rotating, waving, and making eye contact in all directions. I especially noticed how the members adjusted their choreography and staging so no section of fans felt overlooked. Jihyo and Dahyun, despite performing seated due to injury, still took the time to turn, wave, and connect with every corner of the arena, never letting their circumstances take away from the experience.
Fan interaction was a constant throughout the show. Between songs, the members spoke to the audience, pointed out signs in the crowd, and hyped up different sections of the arena. One of the moments that stood out most came from a call-and-response they led with the crowd. The members would shout, “This is for ONCE!” and without hesitation, the entire arena fired back, “This is for TWICE!” Each time it happened, the response grew louder, thousands of voices coming together at once. It was one of those moments where you could physically feel how connected the group and their fans were.
The third act, filled with solo stages, was another highlight of the night. Giving each member a moment to command the arena on their own is always a good idea, especially with larger groups like TWICE. Dahyun performed at a piano designed to look like it was made of glass shards, creating a striking visual that was hard to look away from. Jihyo delivered an incredible dance-focused stage that had the crowd completely locked in, while Jeongyeon kept the energy high in a bright pink western-inspired outfit as she performed “Fix a Drink,” bringing a fun, lively shift to the set. After all of the solos concluded, Chaeyoung, Jihyo and Jeongyeon performed “TAKEDOWN” from K-Pop Demon Hunters, and let me say they absolutely channeled the same energy portrayed from Rumi, Zoey and Mira in the movies. Each member holds a strong presence that can easily control the fans, but something about their passion is different from anything I have ever seen.
Fans were also in for a treat during the encore. Dallas night one was one of the shows where fans got to hear “Doughnut” performed live– a song many fans have been hoping to hear on this tour. I had personally been hoping for “Signal,” but once fans started making donut shapes above their heads with their arms, I couldn’t help but join in to try and get the girls’ attention. The reaction in the arena was immediate as soon as the opening notes played, with excited screams echoing through the venue. It felt like a moment reserved just for that night, and you could tell how much it meant for everyone in the room to experience it together.
By the end of the night, what stood out most wasn’t just the production, the setlist, or even the crowd’s energy– it was how truly breathtaking all nine members of TWICE were on that stage. Sana, Dahyun, Nayeon, Momo, Jeongyeon, Mina, Tzuyu, Jihyo and Chaeyoung– each of them brought something distinct to the performance, yet together they moved as a unit with a level of confidence and presence that filled every inch of the arena. It was the kind of show that reminds you why TWICE has the reputation they do as performers, and why seeing them live is an entirely different experience than watching from a screen.
