Following their first sold out night in Chicago, Spacey Jane comes back to the Metro stage for a second consecutive night. Spacey Jane is an Australian indie-rock band formed back in 2016. Their debut album Sunlight in 2020 started their climb to popularity, with their second album Here Comes Everybody debuted at number one on the ARIA charts in 2022. Spacey Jane kicked off their ‘If That Makes Sense’ US leg at the beginning of September and they are touring the US until mid-October.
A change of plans befell the line up of the show, and local band Hollyy stepped in to open for the band last minute tonight. A local fan favorite, the band’s front man has a rich, soulful voice and their sound is a clash of indie-rock/pop and jazz. It was an honest surprise when he started singing, as his aesthetic gave me more of a rock impression dressed in a black tank top, black jeans and a studded belt. I always love discovering local artists by chance this way. The fans loved them! Despite part of the band being poorly lit on stage (it happens sometimes what can you do) the audience was really enjoying them! The stage presence was strong and they had fun moments of banter with the audience. I can probably speak for most in saying that a highlight of their interactions was when they just started throwing tshirts into the crowd! Sadly I did not get my hands on one but maybe at the next show. If you are looking for a new band in Chicago I would say they are a solid choice.
Next up was Spacey Jane! The floor was packed shoulder to shoulder and the energy started buzzing when the lights went out. They instantly took a hold of the stage and held it through their whole set. The four-piece band was bouncing around that stage all night. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I always enjoy a show more when it is clear the band is also having just as much fun performing as the fans watching! Spacey Jane did just that. Smiles graced the band’s faces the whole set while they jumped and danced around with each other. I had heard the name before but after seeing them live and listening to some of their music, they are definitely getting added to my playlist. Some of my favorites they played included ‘Whateverrrr’, ‘Skin’, and ‘Lots of Nothing.’ I’m also a fan of happy beats with not so happy lyrics, and I think they do this well while bringing a lightness to coming of age stories. Over all super fun sound and it brought a diverse fan base into the show, their vibe seems pretty universal and widely relatable. If you are into indie-rock/pop I would recommend checking them out!
