This past Thursday Svn/Bvrtnt records hosted a show at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox to get fans warmed up for the Sublime show at Red Rocks. Jakob Nowell and Zane Vandevort recently founded the record multi-genre record label after Jakob released his first solo project ‘Enter The Castle’ and reunited with Sublime as the frontman.
As Jakob stepped into his father’s shoes to carry on his legacy, Sublime began to release music again for the first time in over 25 years. They actually just released two more songs this past Friday as well. Sublime is releasing a cover album May 9th titled ‘Look At All The Love We Found: A Tribute To Sublime’. The album is being brought back with new songs for the record's 20th anniversary. With names like Stick Figure, Slightly Stoopid, Zac Brown Band, G. Love and Special Sauce, Pepper, Fishbone, and many more, the album is surely going to be an exciting listen for long time fans and newer fans alike.
Fans piled into the nightclub in downtown Denver, eager to see the line up. The show started with a quick hello and introduction from Jakob himself, thanking everyone for coming out to support the label and get a more intimate show from the bands! Soon after, Jesse James Pariah graced the stage. There was truly never a dull moment on this stage from the second the show started. Jesse and his band certainly knew how to transition from a mellow moment into a full on rock moment. You could definitely tell that everyone was having a great time and the music was great! I definitely want to take a closer listen to his music.
Next up was Strange Case! The band rearranged a bit and Micheal took the mic. The energy stayed up as the alternative rock band from Southern California began their set. Their sound is pretty well described by their self coined descriptor ‘surf and turf’. They have quite the cult following in SoCal and don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
Before everyone knew it, Jakob was stepping onto the stage. He sang some solo songs, some Sublime songs, and then to everyone’s surprise (or maybe everyone knew he was probably going to come out as the line up advertised included ‘special guests’) Bud, the og drummer of Sublime, graced the stage! Fans were excited to see pieces of the band on stage in such an intimate space, and Bud’s still got it! While eventually the show had to come to the end, Jakob and his bandmates hung out on stage for a bit to say hi, take pictures, and even sign some things for fans!
It was a great show and I can’t say I’m not a little bit upset that I couldn’t make it to the Red Rock’s show, which I know was great!
