“Working Late Because She’s a Singer”: Two Years Later, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Tour Still Feels Like a Moment

Two years ago, Sabrina Carpenter walked onto the stage at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena and forever changed many fangirls' and pop girlies' lives.
On September 26, 2024, screaming erupted all around as the lights started to dim. Diana Ross’s song “I’m Coming Out” was blasted as a red heart slowly began filling the center screen, and the crowd’s energy shifted from boredom to excitement, knowing that Sabrina Carpenter would appear in the next few seconds.
Fans of the pop singer gathered there for what proved to be an unforgettable night. Groups of stylish teenagers, dolled-up young adults, and little kids dressed by their mothers were welcomed into the enthusiastic atmosphere, where they would wait for the next two hours before Carpenter even stepped onto the stage.
At the time, Carpenter was in the middle of what felt like a career-defining transformation.
Although the singer had been in the music industry since 2015, it was not until her fifth album, Emails I Can’t Send, that she rose to fame. Sabrina Carpenter was one of the many opening acts for Taylor Swift’s “Eras” Tour in 2024. Having connections with massive celebrities like Taylor Swift, the current biggest name in the music industry, helped build Carpenter’s fan base of over forty million followers on Instagram.
This elevated presence allowed Sabrina to announce her sixth album, Short n’ Sweet, and the stadium tour to accompany it. The “Short n’ Sweet” tour started September 23, with Detroit being the third stop, which made the show feel less like another stop on a massive tour and instead more like a front-row seat to something great about to happen.

Two years later, that feeling has only become more noticeable, and fans are itching for another tour soon, hopefully for Man’s Best Friend, Carpenter’s seventh album, but that’s a discussion for another time.
Walking into the arena that night meant stepping into Carpenter’s world. On theme with the “sweet” part of Carpenter’s album tour, a sea of pastels was all one could see when walking down the stairs heading into the general admission area, better known as “The Pit” to concertgoers. In the pit, the aesthetic was unmistakably Short n’ Sweet: soft, feminine, and playful, with an edge, of course, that reflected Carpenter’s confident personality.
But the fashion was only the beginning. It was the performance that was the cherry on top.
The well-considered set design enhanced the audience’s experience. The stage was transformed into a colorless penthouse. This seemingly unappealing choice to keep the stage white was later justified as intricate spotlights and the singer’s wardrobe lit up the stage.
Sabrina Carpenter was all glitter and glam. Her wardrobe consisted of three outfits: pink lace shapewear with crystals embedded, a black lace catsuit with a pink bow on the front, and, for the finale, a light blue/silver top with a matching mini skirt. Each outfit felt like another extension of the persona she had been building throughout the Short n’ Sweet era: glamorous, cheeky, and completely aware of the audience watching her.
Pit fan Daniela Zarraga approved of Carpenter’s clothing taste while acknowledging that some parents might object to it: “While Sabrina’s taste is gorgeous, one might say it is too much, or too little, especially for the younger crowd. But her stage presence is incredible. She interacts with the audience throughout the show. It was entertaining and unique.”
Carpenter’s stage presence was perhaps the most memorable part of the night.
From the opening video introducing Carpenter, all the dance-along beats, and the lyrics fans screamed at the top of their lungs, the singer understood exactly how to turn a sold-out arena into what felt like a family.
And then came “Espresso,” the show-ending international hit.

That song single-handedly transformed Carpenter’s career, which was once a secret new surprise song at Coachella and the iconic hit of the Short n’ Sweet era.
For fan Katelynrose Birchmeier, the concert became more than just another night out.
“This concert will always have a piece of my soul, even if she didn’t play my favorite song from her older discography,” she said.
Two years later, that sentiment feels especially fitting. Although the heart on that screen may have stopped filling, the lights have gone down countless times since. Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet era has continued to evolve. Pop artists around the world have learned from her creativity and touring expertise. Little Caesar’s Arena and fans just like me will never stop thinking about that one spectacular night.
But I guess that’s just her “me expresso.”
