On May 7th, 2025, Colorado-born and Los Angeles-based rising star Devon Again released two songs that tell a story of heartbreak over character Maryanne Sue. People V. Maryanne Sue and Lover are spunky, fun, and storyline-driven. The duology begins with "People v. Maryanne Sue," a twangy song that immerses the listener in a courtroom, where a case is being heard against a woman who has wronged Devon Again. The song was heavily promoted on TikTok and currently has over 170,000 streams on Spotify. The hook of the song that was teased on TikTok comes from the first chorus, and the lyrics are “Excuse me, miss? Is this your lover? Lover(her)? No, I hardly know her.”

I love how quirky the lyrics are and how the story progresses through them. The second verse of the song reveals that Maryanne Sue cheats on Devon Again through the lyrics “I gave her my whole year, just to find her with John Deere.” This dilemma is confronted in the second chorus, while the man says he also hardly knows her when asked about Maryanne Sue. This queer country-pop song concludes with Devon Again pleading with the judge to lock up Maryanne for her crimes and betrayal.

The story slows down to a more reflective state in the second song, Lover. In this song, Devon sings about how she should’ve known Maryanne Sue was trouble, yet she gave her best even though she knew it wouldn’t be enough. My favorite lyric from this song is “Oh, I can’t keep her out of trouble. I can’t keep her in love.” I think this lyric shows Devon's realization that she can’t control Maryanne Sue, and at the end of the day, she doesn’t really know her either.

Devon Again is an artist to keep an eye on, as she keeps releasing hit after hit. Her song Cherry Cola blew up on TikTok last year and currently has over 4,000,000 streams on Spotify. She was also shouted out back in February by Chappell Roan for being an artist who deserves more recognition. Devon Again has proved herself to be a unique online personality and a phenomenal musician. This iconic duo of songs is the perfect whirlwind romance/crash-out anthems to add to your summer playlists.
