On August 3rd, Gigi Perez took a day off from her tour opening for Noah Kahan to bring a headlining show to Indianapolis. The date at Old National Centre sold out, and fans were lined up down the block long before doors opened. The crowd moved quickly, though, as everyone was excited to get inside and get a good spot to watch from.

Opening up for us was Camille Blackman, a singer-songwriter from Washington, D.C. She was blown away by the size of the crowd the moment she walked onstage, and it truly seemed like she was excited to be there performing for us. The crowd was supportive, cheering her on during her most passionate vocal parts in the music. We even got to hear an unreleased song, which will be out “eventually,” according to Blackman. Before heading off stage, she took a selfie with us all to show her family just how packed a room she got to play for, which I thought was a really sweet moment.

If you haven’t heard of her, though I bet you have, Gigi Perez is a singer-songwriter from Florida. While I have to admit she isn’t my usual genre of music, hearing her songs come across my TikTok a couple of years ago had me instantly hooked. Her strong, emotional vocals drew me in, and I’m happy to report that she’s even better live.

Shouts from the crowd calling for Gigi to come on stage happened long before her set time, and her entrance brought out cheers and waves of pride flags across the room. The crowd was respectful during her set, though, cheering on at strong vocal moments and loudly singing along with her. Fans were brought to tears by the third song, and it was clear that she had a strong impact on those who’d come to see her.

She mixed her bigger hits in throughout the setlist, with my favorite song, “Fable,” being fourth in line. During a few of the songs, she gave her guitarist time in the spotlight as they jammed out together. She also had fun anecdotes to share, such as claiming she’s the person you don’t want to smoke weed with before performing “Sometimes (Backwood).” The night closed out on the song that built her career, “Sailor Song,” and the room was at its loudest despite the long set.

Gigi continues touring with Noah Kahan through the rest of August, but be sure to keep an eye out for one of her three remaining solo dates. No matter which way you choose to see her, you definitely won’t regret it.
