Your New Favorite Artist - Eloise

“Wanderlust” was the song that brought me to Eloise for the first time in 2021. “I could write a hundred different poems under candlelight / Pour my bеating heart out into every linе / But words don't know the way that you look in my eyes / They'll never know the feeling.” It's a song full of devotion, with a guitar sound so clean there's nothing to hide behind. Her album Somewhere In-Between quickly became one of my favorite albums of all time, and it sent me looking for how someone this assured showed up out of nowhere.
Turns out her whole career traces back to one Instagram post. She was a Brit School student uploading covers when Bruno Major came across her version of one of his songs. Per a 2023 interview with Isis Magazine, he messaged her the next day asking if she'd sing it with him at a show that week. They'd never run it together before. She left school within the month and spent three years in his touring band. Billie Eilish gave her another push around the same time, dropping "Leftside" from her 2019 EP into a Radio 1 mix. Then, Somewhere In-Between arrived in 2021, then her debut Drunk On A Flight, co-written with Conor Albert. The sound sits between jazz, soul, and plain singer-songwriter, held up by harmonies she stacks thick enough to carry a whole song.
That Bruno Major connection isn't a coincidence, either. I was an avid listener of his before I found Eloise, and I think if you're a fan of his sound, you'll love her just as much. She's also one of the few artists where you can pick out any song at random, and if you get it, you'll get it.
Still, a few are worth knowing going in. "Trick of the Moon" is one of her classics, and the most theatrical, with the vintage microphone crackle, the narrator, the applause. "Subside" is her most loved according to streaming numbers, and it got the loudest reaction from the crowd when I caught her live in 2023. My personal favorite, though, is "Friends Who Kiss," a collaboration with fellow British singer-songwriter James Smith. It's as heartbroken and theatrical as the title suggests. “Some loves weren't meant to be had only to be felt”

If you're into lyrics that are tender and a little merciless, you'll love Eloise. Five years on from that first listen, and I still haven't found anyone who does it quite the same way. Start wherever you want. You'll end up going through all of it anyway.
