Summer Hoop preaches on toxic covenant in “Mindlessly”
by Mikaela Mohr | July 31st, 2026
In her new release, Summer Hoop sings, “I will follow you so mindlessly”; after you stream the song, it will be the other way around.
“Mindlessly” explores the narrative of giving your whole self to someone while being unsure of reciprocation. The lyrics include religious comparisons, such as worshiping someone to the point that they may as well be God themself. The hymn highlights harmonious octaves throughout the chorus accompanied by upbeat tracking.
Similar to the analogy of seeing through rose-colored glasses, Hoop describes this phenomenon of being blinded by your emotions with, “white pearly gates, I’m walking through. I met God, and they look just like you,” leading to the blinding encounter. Though the person embodies godly abilities in Hoop’s eyes, not even they can save her from hopelessly falling for them. Similar to how a disciple follows their God, Hoop follows this person, doing as they say and completely trusting them.
She sings, ‘I’m digging my grave, but I'm praying for you. Can't save me baby, I will follow you so mindlessly.” Hoop knows she’s setting herself up for failure, but can’t think clearly and leans into the trance, even if it leads to her own grave. She also acknowledges her concerning loyalty in the lyrics, “why am I your martyr just to get you to hold me, when I feel unholy”.
In the second verse, Hoop finds revelation and understands the suffocating hold this person has on her. She sings, “Like I'm chained up to the cross around your neck. And if I make it out with my last breath, I'm gonna tell them all the things you did”. She alludes to this person essentially having her in a chokehold. Opposed to God being nailed to the cross, Hoop is chained to a cross necklace upon the one whom she had viewed as divine.
“Mindlessly” is Hoop’s second single of the year, following “The Pursuit of Misery” in May. Aside from her own tracks, she has had two features this year: “Higher” with Lost In Separation, and “This Song Should’ve Been About You and I” with NIGHTBREAKERS, which came out just last week.
