Lydian Sky is a progressive music project where beautiful soundscapes meet art rock and electronica. Formed out of COVID in 2020 by astrophotographer and Berklee-trained record producer and recording engineer Scott Carness, Lydian Sky originally existed as a way to make original soundtracks for astronomy films. It didn’t take long for the project to grow into something bigger, and in 2021, Carness headed into the studio with acclaimed producer Chad Shlosser (Polyphia, Slash). In collaboration with Studio City drummer Rich Lambert, the team created an ethereal 4-song EP titled “Nebula” in three days.
In 2023, the team underwent another reconfiguration. This time with drummer Rusty Knorr and vocalist/songwriter Sammi Garett (King Crimson, Talking Heads), adding to the depth and expanding the sound of Lydian Sky. Now, Lydian Sky looks ahead to their future, which promises the release of their next album, “Pink Aliens in Tahiti,” in April 2026.
Luckily for all of us who want a piece of what to expect from this new album, Lydian Sky has just released a track titled “Aloft” on December 12th. This 6-minute, 29-second track is engaging and musically cinematic. Garett’s soft vocals blend beautifully with the light drum beats and melodic guitars. The guitars also have their own moment to shine in brief solos that take on the task of being a sort of secondary vocals in the piece. As we reach the final half of the song, pieces of the project’s soundscape origins peek through with electronic, near-birdlike sounds blending into the mix, giving us a hint at the nature aspects that have inspired the existence of Lydian Sky. The upbeat tempo and constant driving along of the lyrical moments make the track seem much shorter than it really is, and once it’s over, you’ll want to listen again. Overall, it’s an extremely unique mix of what you’d expect in progressive rock with many unexpected elements that keep you engaged and actively listening throughout the entire piece.
