Stovetop Gemini Releases Their Latest EP: Karyo

Stovetop Gemini, a four-piece alternative band out of Colorado just released their debut EP: Karyo. The EP stacks up with five new tracks from the band, further curating their eccentric rock sound.

The opening track and leading single, ‘Orchid’ serves as a great opening act for the project. The song opens with a soft guitar medley and drum beat guiding you into the opening lyrics. The tension quickly builds as the vocals take over. The subtle rasp and depth to lead Mick’s voice fuels the emotion of the song. Throughout the whole song, it almost feels like a roller coaster, building up to a peak in instrumentals and vocals before coming back down to a mellow sound to reflect on the heat of the moments before. You can find a more in depth review of Orchid here: (‘Orchid’: The Leading Single From Stovetop Gemini’s New EP).

The next track is titled ‘Dizzy’, and it really portrays exactly what that feeling is. A slight reverb on the vocals throughout the song gives it a ‘ghostly’, almost far away feeling, sort of like the feeling of being dizzy, right on the edge of losing consciousness. The weight of the song feels heavy, the guitar and drums beating down on the words cutting through them.

Next up is ‘Gorilla’. The track starts with an isolated guitar line that grabs your attention. Immediately following that a fast paced, upbeat melody mixed with a strong beat that brings the energy up. The track includes a faded recording at the end, mixed with what I would describe as wind for a lack of a better term, creating a really gripping audio experience that forces you to listen to hear what is coming through your speakers before it fades away.

Then we have ‘levitation’, which starts off much more mellow than the previous tracks, with a quiet guitar melody paired with chirping birds to give you a bit of a relaxing tease before it hits the ball rolling. A big build at the front of the song emulates the rise of emotion in the vocals, before reaching a mellow verse where lyrics detail finding yourself with your head in the clouds, and what fighting through that can look like.

To round out the EP is ‘miami’. I think this is my favorite track off the EP honestly. They sort of shake up the sound they have been building throughout the project and bring in a funky, beachy guitar beat and merge it with rocky vocals and drums that blend into an exciting audio adventure. I would have to take a wild guess and say that the beachy sound is a play on the song title and the story detailed in the track. While it may seem like a completely different sound than the rest of the tracks, I think it does a great job of showing the band's range while still emulating some of their signature sounds and lyrical content. Not to mention I do love a good raspy belting scream in a song and there is one in here.

The project as a whole definitely left me wanting more from the band and I will be keeping an eye on them and their future projects. I really enjoy the exciting blends of funk and rock that they are exploring while still keeping true to some of the classic alternative sounds.
