Twenty One Pilots has been a staple name in the alternative music scene for over 10 years. The duo (and their team) have created an incredibly intricate universe in their music over the last 10 years, officially introducing the story in their 2015 album Blurryface. While the ‘lore’ of the music is extensive, so much so it would take hours if not days to fully explain the story, as a long time fan here is my best quick summary now that the whole story has been told as of the latest album. Tyler, the lead singer, takes on the character of ‘Clancy’ who is in a tense battle with the ‘Bishops.’ The Bishops are the rulers of the fictional city of Dema, where the story takes place. The story itself is a metaphor for Tyler’s personal struggles with anxiety and depression. Josh, the drummer, takes on the character of ‘Torch Bearer’ and helps lead a band of rebels called ‘Bandito’s’ to try and help Clancy take down the Bishops who preach that death is the only path to happiness. The story details their battle to defeat the Bishops and escape Dema. There is so much more to it, but that is a general start to the story.
This latest album brought the story to a conclusion for now. After their release and tour for Clancy last year, the band’s momentum for these last two tours was huge. Especially after Tyler mentioned this may be the last tour for a long while before they headed out on the Breach Tour. And fans showed up and showed out. I’m not sure I saw a single fan in that amphitheater that wasn't wearing a band t-shirt or dressed up in theme with the lore. Many-a-Clancy’s, Bandito’s, Ned’s(which is another part of the lore, they are super cute creatures in the stories universe), and red and yellow duct tape adorned people’s outfits (the Banditos and Clancy wear colored tape).
Taking the stage first was Dayglow. You may have heard their song ‘Can I Call You Tonight?’ The indie-rock band just released their latest album earlier this year titled ‘Dayglow (Superbloom)’. The band has a super vibey indie sound that seems to take inspiration from sounds of Tame Impala, and mellowed versions of the Doobie Brothers. The band was fun to watch. They had a good stage presence and vibey music that fans enjoyed and helped hype up the audience for Twenty One Pilots. I’d be curious to see one of their headline shows to get the bands full scope of performance! Good music, good vibes, not much to complain about there.
The main event of the night was highly anticipated. You could feel the room shake with anticipation as the minutes crawled closer to Twenty One Pilot’s arrival to stage. Even with earplugs the screams when the lights went out were earth shattering and the energy was palpable. Even the fans that had been there since 1am that morning for a chance at the barricade were full of energy when the duo took the stage. Boy do these boys know how to put on a show. Even in a massive venue, they are known for bringing the show closer to everyone. They got their steps in running around the amphitheater that night. They went out to the back of the amphitheater several times for lots of b-stage moments. As well as the famous ‘drum island’ where the audience holds up a platform with a small drum kit that Josh plays on while they hold him. A big part of Twenty One Pilot’s message is to stay alive, and one of my favorite quotes from the night was when Tyler paused and looked out into the crowd and said “I’m really glad you made it to today.”
You could tell that both he and the fans felt the words really hard and it was almost cathartic. Especially as a fan who has been a fan for so long and felt the music resonate so heavily. So many fans in that amphitheater relate to the music and Tyler’s writing hits really deep with a lot of the fan base, so when everyone comes together for a live show, in my experience, has been almost healing. That’s what I think music is really about. Its art, not everyone has to like it but when you are able to somehow connect with over 20,000 people in a room through your music its something really special. Not only that but the show is so exciting to watch. Pyrotechnics, video visuals, the Dema story line playing out as part of the show, you really do get your money’s worth with them.
While I am sad that this may be an end to an era with them, I have a sneaking suspicion that they will be back one day down the road with more shows and music. It was a fantastic show and I hope to see them again one day!
